Two-wheeler battery swapping market reaches tens of billions

Sodium batteries to be mass-produced first in the battery swapping market

At present, the two-wheeled vehicle replacement battery is basically a lithium battery, but from the product performance point of view, the sodium battery is more competitive.

First, good safety performance: compared with lithium batteries, sodium batteries produce low probability of dendrites, will not cause spontaneous combustion due to short-circuit piercing the internal structure of the battery, sodium batteries in the overcharging, over-discharging, short-circuiting, pinprick, extrusion and other tests can be done without fire, without explosion.

Second, fast charging: compared with lithium batteries, sodium batteries have better fast charging performance, generally speaking, lithium iron phosphate batteries need 20-30 minutes to charge to 80%, sodium batteries are expected to shorten the time by about 40%. Shorten the charging time consumed, can improve the battery turnover rate and the daily service capacity of the power swap station, thereby shortening the payback period of the manufacturer.

Third, high and low temperature performance is excellent: sodium battery operating temperature range of -40C-80 ℃, high and low temperature environment, the battery still has a good capacity retention rate, capacity retention rate in cold environments can still be close to 80%, and lithium batteries in 0 degrees below the charge and discharge is only the usual 50% -60%, so in the cold places, sodium batteries have more advantages.

For sodium battery enterprises, compared with the two-wheeled vehicle field, the two-wheeled vehicle battery swap market is expected to take the lead in volume. Several sodium battery manufacturers rush to layout

It is understood that at present, there are already a number of two-wheeled vehicle battery swap enterprises, including CHINA TOWER, DUDU SWAP, Chunteng MOSS, Hetun SWAP, etc., in the field of sodium battery layout; including DFD, XINGHENG POWER, ZhongNa Energy, MoNa Technology, and other sodium battery manufacturers.

On August 18th of this year, MoNa Technology also signed a cooperation agreement with Shenzhen Chunteng Moss around the application of sodium-ion batteries in the field of two-wheeled vehicle battery swapping, and at the same time, MoNa’s team delivered the first batch of 48V20Ah two-wheeled vehicle special-purpose battery packs equipped with sodium-ion batteries to Chunteng Moss, which were put into the use of the first batch of users.

DFD has won the bid for CHINA TOWER’s key materials and technology development project for 48V sodium-ion battery cells for battery swapping in 2023. The procurement mainly includes the design and production of core cathode materials for sodium-ion battery cells;

R&D and preparation of commercialized battery cells; preliminary development of supporting BMS and battery pack products; battery performance testing and piloting, etc. The project is scheduled to start immediately after the deal is finalized, with the start of prototype delivery and pilot validation no later than the end of October 2023, and the project will be completed by the end of November 2023 for closure.

DUDU SWAPCEO Liao Zhicheng said, although the current DUDU SWAP platform use lithium batteries, but the sodium battery has been the future trend. On October 18th, Zhu Chen, Vice Chairman of ZhongNa Energy, visited Fuzhou Zuohai Hetun New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. and in the future, Hetun SWAP will focus on the layout of two-wheeled vehicle sodium battery swapping.

At present, ZhongNa Energy has set up a fully automatic production line in Yangzhou with an annual capacity of 1GWh full lug large cylindrical cells and 5GWh battery module PACK, which can provide cylindrical 32140, 4695 LiFePO4 and sodium-ion cells with the advantages of ultra-fast charging, high rate of discharge, superior low-temperature performance, and long lifespan.

The Shanghai University team has successfully developed the 4680 all-ear sodium-ion cylindrical battery. The product is based on all-pole core and steel shell encapsulation system, with a cycle life of more than 3,000 times, providing an ultra-long lifespan; It has excellent low-temperature discharge performance in -40℃ low-temperature environment, excellent multiplier performance and reduced temperature rise, and can be fully charged with 90% of the battery capacity in 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, for the application of this battery in the market of two-wheeled vehicle and three-wheeled vehicle battery swa application, we have developed a sodium-ion battery management system, which can accurately predict the working conditions of sodium power by constructing a chemical property model and complex algorithms to establish a theoretical support for the application of sodium power in the field of battery swapping, and to improve the predictability through a high-precision calibration model.
