Intelligentization has become a new trend of two-wheeled electric vehicles

Table of Contents

As one of the most important short-distance transportation means, two-wheeled electric vehicles have not only penetrated into instant delivery and shared travel, but have also entered the field of personal travel.

According to statistics, the number of electric two-wheelers in China has reached more than 350 million units, and the annual sales volume has reached more than 50 million. In the past 2022, many two-wheeled electric vehicle manufacturers in China have achieved simultaneous increases in sales and unit prices.

Two-wheeled electric vehicles begin to be intelligent

Judging from the trend in recent years, it can be seen that the redemption boom brought about by the implementation of the new national standard has shown signs of receding, and product innovation, product mix improvement and export are the next round of outlets.

However, as user portraits gradually tend to be younger, equipment usage habits drive users to pursue the intelligence of two-wheeled electric vehicles. Therefore, whether it is a traditional brand such as Yadea or Tailg, and internet brand such as Ninebot or NIU, or even a shared travel platform such as Harbin, they have all begun to cut into intelligence.

Our definition of intelligence for two-wheeled electric vehicles mainly focuses on vehicle intelligence, vehicle control intelligence, and data intelligence. Through technologies such as the Internet of Things, mobile communications, and artificial intelligence, on the premise of ensuring a safe and efficient travel experience, it meets the diverse travel needs of users.

From the perspective of evaluation standards, the judgment of the intelligence level of two-wheeled electric vehicles is mainly divided into the hardware part of vehicle state collection and management, the hardware part of usage information collection and interaction, and intelligent scenarios such as driving assistance, energy, anti-theft and entertainment.

But as far as the evaluation scores are concerned, we can have a general understanding of the current direction of intelligentization of two-wheeled electric vehicle manufacturers. For example, entertainment functions such as audio, video and games have begun to be applied in the intelligentization of automobiles, but they have not been extended to two-wheeled electric vehicles at present.

This is also closely related to the positioning of electric two-wheeled vehicles as short-distance transportation tools, not to mention whether users have such needs. In order to ensure safety, the current two-wheeled electric vehicles will not give priority to the development of entertainment intelligence.

Intelligent driving experience

Despite this, there are still many intelligent directions that manufacturers are rushing to, such as intelligent driving experience such as human-vehicle interaction, anti-theft, and wireless communication. In terms of intelligent driving experience, it mainly relies on the hardware resources of two-wheeled electric vehicles.

Traditional two-wheeled electric vehicles lack the necessary sensors and V2X communication modules in terms of hardware configuration, so they will inevitably encounter various pain points in the opening and closing of car locks, anti-theft safety, and car safety. For example, the key is easy to lose, the anti-theft module becomes a decoration, and it is easy to steal the car.

Today’s smart two-wheeled electric vehicles have begun to match the car’s smart driving experience. Take Hello’s VVSMART super-networked car-machine system as an example. By connecting the mobile phone and the electric two-wheeled vehicle through Hi-OS, not only the mobile phone can be used as the central control and car key, but also the battery safety status and location of the two-wheeled electric vehicle can be accurately monitored, and the car can be locked remotely with one key.

The same goes for the smart two-wheeled electric vehicles launched by Ninebot, taking its new product Ninebot Electric Mmax90 as an example. This model controls the vehicle through the bluetooth of the mobile phone/watch/bracelet or the cloud to realize switch and intelligent unlocking. The new sensors built into the seat cushion and temple can ensure riding safety more accurately.

And Ninebot has started the commercialization process of smart services. In addition to smart services related to cycling safety, such as anti-theft alarm, lost mode, and riding track sharing, a renewal subscription is required after the first year of free trial.

M2M terminal manufacturers such as Mobile Communications are already making every effort to develop IoT smart terminals for two-wheeled electric vehicles, such as the basic product SC50C. SC50C supports 4T LTE Cat.1 full Netcom, as well as Beidou, GPS, and LBS triple positioning anti-theft, which can obtain the status of the vehicle’s location, remaining power, etc. in real time, and realize remote power off.

The multi-functional SC300 has more functions such as Bluetooth non-sensing unlocking, one-key defense, one-key self-test, etc., providing more intelligent features.

The-Snapdragon-digital-chassis
At the recently held “Qualcomm Automotive Technology and Cooperation Summit”, Qualcomm demonstrated a system-level platform for intelligent networked vehicles, the Snapdragon digital chassis.

This solution has been used in hundreds of millions of cars around the world, bringing users a smarter, smoother and safer driving experience. However, on two-wheeled vehicles, Qualcomm has also prepared a Snapdragon digital chassis solution that provides networking services for two-wheeled vehicles.

From the perspective of connectivity, the Snapdragon digital chassis will provide 5G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connections for two-wheeled electric vehicles, and at the same time support a series of intelligent networking functions such as finding battery replacement near me, roadside assistance, social networking and notification push.

Qualcomm has already occupied a large share in the digital chassis of automobiles, but whether it can also take the lead in the more cost-sensitive two-wheeled electric vehicles, we will wait and see.

Smart after-car service

In addition to the intelligent communication and intelligent driving experience of the vehicle itself, intelligent after-car services are also an important intelligent feature valued by consumers, especially charging and swapping.

With the rapid growth of the two-wheeled electric vehicle market, a number of IoT and battery manufacturers have flooded into the two-wheeled vehicle smart charging and battery replacement market, especially in the two two-wheeled electric vehicle scenarios of instant delivery and shared travel.

For example, Harbin chose to cooperate with CATL to help drivers eliminate mileage anxiety with the help of CATL’ G58 super battery and the deployed Xiaoha battery swapping station. Of course, in order to achieve real smart battery swapping, the support of wireless communication technology is also indispensable.

The module manufacturer Fibocom has launched a series of 5G/LTE modules for charging and swapping shared two-wheeled vehicles. For example, in a shared battery cabinet integrating software and hardware. The battery cabinet with the built-in Fibocom LTE module can not only solve the problem of remote communication management and monitoring of the charging cabinet, but also realize safety features such as fire prevention, smoke detection and high temperature warning, and equipment short-circuit leakage protection.

And through Fibocom’s trusted on-chain module, the battery operating status can be uploaded in real time, and the entire network monitors lithium batteries while ensuring information security and facilitating shared platform management.

The degree of intelligence of EVs and electric two-wheeler

In fact, it can be seen from the intelligent direction of two-wheeled electric vehicles above that compared with electric vehicles, two-wheeled electric vehicles have chosen a completely different route.

This is not only determined by the shape of the two-wheeled electric vehicle, but also by the huge influencing factor of cost. As a means of transportation for civilians, electric two-wheelers are more sensitive to prices, and it is difficult to find a way out in this market by blindly stacking materials in pursuit of ultimate intelligence.

Therefore, the current intelligent features can only bring limited value-added space for two-wheeled electric vehicles. In the short term, no manufacturers will want to integrate more complex ADAS and other technologies into two-wheeled electric vehicles, and even if there are, most of them are conceptual products.

Because the cost of batteries and motors has limited the cost required for high-level intelligence, it is necessary to wait for the hardware cost to be further reduced before mass production can be achieved. In terms of business model, whether it is an electric vehicle or a two-wheeled electric vehicle, although the degree of intelligence is different, they may still switch to a subscription service charging model.

This is like the positioning of the data center and the edge side on AI. Edge AI will never reach the ultra-high computing power of the data center, but this does not prevent us from reducing the weight of AI. Therefore, judging from the current situation, the intelligence and edge AI of electric two-wheelers are the products of light intelligence, even if the user’s perception is not strong, it has come quietly.
