What is NMP solvent?

NMP, is one of the most commonly used lithium battery auxiliary materials. Surry preparation: NMP solvent, as the solvent of binder polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), mi, solves, stirs and distributes binder, conductive agent and cathode active substance to form uniform slurry. The quality of slurry dispersion directly affects the quality and performance of lithium ion battery.

Coating: it is the next process after the preparation of the slurry. The paste with good stability, high viscosity and good fluidity is evenly coated on the cathode metal foil. NMP solvent, as the liquid carrier of the paste, has very good wettability and fluidity, and is the mainstream coating solvent. The coating link is of great significance to the capacity, service life and safety of lithium-ion batteries.

Drying: After coating, the cathode sheet is baked and dried in the vacuum dryer. The baking temperature is 120 ± 5 degrees Celsius, and the NMP solvent in the electrode slurry is removed, so that the adhesive, conductive agent and cathode material in the slurry form a porous film with uniform pore size and uniform distribution, and cover the electrode sheet.

NMP solvents for other applications

NMP solvent production capacity in China

BDO performs dehydrogenation in the presence of a metal oxide catalyst to produce GBL, and GBL reacts with monomethylamine (MMA) to form NMP. By December 2021, there are 13 GBL production enterprises made from BDO raw materials, with a total production capacity of 485,000 tons or under construction, and the actual total output in 2020 is 180,000 tons. The production capacity of NMP solvent can be divided into synthesis and recycling and purification.

Benefiting from the rapid development of the new energy vehicle industry, the supply gap of PVDF has been widening since the fourth quarter of 2020, and the product price is also rising. In July 2021, the average price of lithium battery products has increased from about 70,000 RMB in 2020 to more than 170,000.

As a necessary supporting solvent for PVDF, the price of NMP solvent has also been rising along with PVDF, from 15,000 RMB / ton at the beginning of 2021 to more than 40,000 RMB / ton at present.

In terms of the competitive pattern, with the increasing maturity of Chinese manufacturers’ technology and the improvement of product quality, the advantages of competitors from other countries, such as BASF, Mitsubishi Chemical and other products, no longer exist, and gradually withdraw from the Chinese market.

At present, China’s competition is mainly the competition between direct manufacturers, recycling and purification manufacturers and a small number of import and export traders.
