NIO Battery Swap Route: 3,605km Silk Road Now Connected
NIO’s Silk Road battery swap route is now fully connected. The company’s 4,125th battery swap station, at Sayram Lake in Xinjiang, closed the last gap on the corridor, which which officially completed the route on September 26, 2026, ahead of Chairman William Li confirming the milestone at the company’s PowerUP 2026 event on September 27.
According to NIO, the route runs 3,605 kilometers from Xi’an in the east to Khorgos, a China-Kazakhstan border port in the west, and is served by 33 swap stations.
The milestone says something about where teknologi penukaran baterai has arrived. For passenger cars, swapping now extends from city stations to an intercity trunk route across northwest China. For light electric vehicles, it works at the other end of the trip, inside the city, where riders make short, frequent journeys. Two different jobs, one shared idea: replace waiting to charge with exchanging a battery.
The Numbers Behind the Route
NIO says that with the route connected, a driver can leave any NIO battery swap station in China and reach every provincial-level region on the Chinese mainland using battery swaps alone.
Why the G30 Connection Matters
The Silk Road route follows the G30 Lianyungang-Khorgos Expressway across northwest China. The G30 is not a coastal motorway. It crosses the Hexi Corridor, the Gobi fringe, and long stretches of arid, sparsely serviced terrain, conditions where conventional charging networks are typically slower and harder to build. Swap coverage here is a meaningful test of whether the model can work over long distances where grid and service infrastructure are thin.
The Off-Grid Solar Station at Xingxingxia
One of the most technically interesting nodes went live days earlier. The swap station at the Xingxingxia service area, the first stop after entering Xinjiang, is described by NIO as the world’s first zero-carbon, off-grid solar-storage-swap station. CnEVPost reports that it meets all of its electricity needs through solar generation and energy storage, without relying on the power grid.
The energy concept travels well: where the grid is weak or absent, a swap facility can be powered by on-site solar and storage instead of a high-capacity grid connection. Smaller swap cabinets draw far less power per site, so the same approach may suit light EV networks in low-infrastructure areas, though site economics would need to be checked case by case.
A Tale of Two Swap Models: Passenger Cars vs. Micro-Mobility
Battery swapping has split into two models that solve different problems.
NIO’s corridor shows that the heavy-asset model can be operated over intercity distances. That solves the long-trip problem for car owners. In the city, the constraint is different: riders who make dozens of short trips a day need a battery back in minutes, and compact cabinets with small packs can be placed close to where riders already are. Where rider density is high, that can translate into many swaps per cabinet per day, which is why light EV swapping is drawing operator interest as its own kind of infrastructure.
Scale shows up differently too. William Li described NIO’s 4,125 stations as able to form an 8 GWh energy storage network, a function of large stations holding large reserves. Light EV cabinets store far less each, so their weight in the energy system comes from numbers and utilization rather than per-site capacity.
What It Signals for the Swap Industry
Read as an industry development, the corridor points to three things:
Looking Ahead
NIO plans to increase its charging and swap routes to 100 in 2026, and each new corridor extends the range of swap-based long-distance travel.
For anyone following the sector, the direction is clear. Swapping is becoming an established layer of electrified transport, with passenger-car corridors handling the long haul and light EV cabinets handling the last miles of the city.
Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan
It is a passenger-car swap corridor running 3,605 km from Xi'an to Khorgos, served by 33 NIO swap stations. The corridor was fully connected on September 26, 2026, when NIO's 4,125th swap station at Sayram Lake went live, completing the route.
Highway passenger-car swapping, as NIO runs it, uses drive-in automated stations that exchange large under-vehicle packs in a few minutes, with roughly 2,000 kWh of battery reserve per station according to NIO. These stations sit along highways and in cities and are built to remove range anxiety on long trips. Light EV swap cabinets are compact, often curbside units holding small standardized packs that riders typically swap by hand in seconds, with far less energy per site. They are placed where riders cluster, such as dense urban zones and logistics hubs, and are built for frequent short trips. In short, the passenger-car model is a heavier asset built for reach, and the light EV model is a lighter asset built for frequency.
It is a swap facility that operates without a grid connection, using solar photovoltaics as its energy source and on-site battery storage for 24-hour service. NIO describes its passenger-car station at Xingxingxia on the G30 as the world's first zero-carbon station of this type. The same energy concept could apply to smaller swap facilities in remote areas.
Yes, according to NIO, for its four-wheel drivers. With the Silk Road route connected, NIO says drivers can leave any NIO swap station and reach every provincial-level region on the Chinese mainland using swaps alone. The route follows the G30 expressway and is served by 33 swap stations between Xi'an and Khorgos.
