A diferencia de las pilas primarias (desechables), las pilas de NiMH pueden someterse a numerosos ciclos de carga y descarga. El c\u00e1todo (electrodo positivo) est\u00e1 compuesto de hidr\u00f3xido de n\u00edquel (Ni(OH)\u2082), mientras que el \u00e1nodo (electrodo negativo) utiliza una aleaci\u00f3n met\u00e1lica que absorbe hidr\u00f3geno, com\u00fanmente denominada aleaci\u00f3n de almacenamiento de hidr\u00f3geno.<\/p><p>El electrolito suele ser una soluci\u00f3n concentrada de hidr\u00f3xido de potasio (KOH) (explore <a href=\"https:\/\/batteryswapstation.com\/es\/lithium-ion-battery-electrolyte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">electrolito de bater\u00eda de iones de litio<\/span><\/a>), que facilita el transporte de iones entre electrodos. Durante el proceso de carga y descarga, los iones de hidr\u00f3geno se mueven entre los electrodos positivo y negativo, realizando as\u00ed el almacenamiento y la liberaci\u00f3n de energ\u00eda.<\/p><p>Ecuaci\u00f3n de reacci\u00f3n qu\u00edmica de carga y descarga<br \/>Electrodo positivo: Ni(OH)\u2082 + OH- \u21cc NiOOH + H\u2082O + e-<br \/>Electrodo negativo: M + H\u2082O + e- \u21cc MHab + OH-<br \/>Reacci\u00f3n total: Ni(OH)\u2082 + M \u21cc NiOOH + MH.<\/p><p>Nota: M representa la aleaci\u00f3n de almacenamiento de hidr\u00f3geno, y Hab representa los \u00e1tomos de hidr\u00f3geno adsorbidos.<\/p><p>Durante la carga, la energ\u00eda el\u00e9ctrica suministrada por la fuente de alimentaci\u00f3n externa impulsa la reacci\u00f3n electroqu\u00edmica, y el hidr\u00f3xido de n\u00edquel del electrodo positivo pierde electrones, experimenta una reacci\u00f3n de oxidaci\u00f3n y forma ox\u00edgeno de hidr\u00f3xido de n\u00edquel de alto valor. Al mismo tiempo, la aleaci\u00f3n de almacenamiento de hidr\u00f3geno del electrodo negativo absorbe iones de hidr\u00f3geno para formar hidruro met\u00e1lico. Este proceso convierte la energ\u00eda el\u00e9ctrica en energ\u00eda qu\u00edmica y la almacena en la pila.<\/p><p>Durante la descarga, el circuito externo se conecta y la reacci\u00f3n electroqu\u00edmica procede a la inversa. El hidruro met\u00e1lico libera iones de hidr\u00f3geno, que participan en la reacci\u00f3n de reducci\u00f3n del electrodo positivo y reducen el hidr\u00f3xido de n\u00edquel de alto valor a hidr\u00f3xido de n\u00edquel de bajo valor.
